Mac mini M6 vs Mac Studio M5 Max: which should you buy this month

With the new Mac mini and Mac Studio both arriving on 22 September, the question for most UK buyers is less about which machine is faster and more about whether they would actually use the extra performance they are paying for.

Mac mini is the sensible starting point. The M6 model is designed for everyday work, general creative apps and increasingly demanding on-device AI tasks. Apple quotes up to 40 per cent faster CPU performance than the M4 mini, while the M5 Pro version gives buyers a substantial step up without moving to Mac Studio.

Mac Studio with M5 Max starts at £2,499 and is aimed at people whose work can make sustained use of extra CPU and GPU resources, memory bandwidth and pro connectivity. The M5 Ultra version goes considerably further, including configurations with up to 512GB of unified memory.

For photo work, coding, music production and most video editing, a well-specced Mac mini is likely to be the better-value purchase. Mac Studio starts to justify itself when rendering time, very large projects, local AI models or other sustained professional workloads are costing you actual working time.

Our rule of thumb remains simple: if you cannot name the workload that requires a Mac Studio, you probably do not need one. Put the difference towards a good display, storage or memory instead.
